Windows Matched to Southeast Michigan's Heating and Cooling Demands
Tailor Made Windows has been replacing windows in Southeast Michigan since 1923, so we have seen plenty of homes where a window looks fine but is still costing the homeowner comfort. The glass may not be cracked, the sash may still operate, but cold air shows up around the opening every winter or one room becomes noticeably warmer than the rest of the house every summer.
Energy-efficient replacement windows help by slowing the rate at which heat moves through the glass and frame. Double- and triple-pane insulated glass puts sealed airspace between you and the outdoors, while Low-E coatings reflect infrared heat while letting natural light through.
But the window itself is only part of the equation. The way it fits the opening, the condition of the surrounding frame, and how that opening is insulated and sealed all matter. A good glass package cannot make up for a poorly installed window.

The Glass and Frame Technology Behind the Performance
Understanding what goes into an energy-efficient window makes it easier to compare options. These core components work together:
Double-Pane Insulated Glass: Two panes of glass with a sealed space between them give you substantially better insulation than an old single-pane window. For many Southeast Michigan homes, this is the starting point.
Triple-Pane Insulated Glass: Adding an additional pane creates an extra layer of insulating space between the interior and exterior. It can make sense when you want additional thermal performance, particularly in colder rooms or homes where winter comfort is a bigger concern.
Low-E Glass Coatings: Low-E coatings are applied to the glass to reduce heat transfer. In winter, they help keep more heat on the inside. During summer, they help limit the amount of outside heat coming through the glass.
Vinyl Frame Construction: Vinyl holds up well through Michigan's temperature swings and does not have the conductivity problems associated with older metal window frames. The internal chambers of the frame also contribute to its insulating performance.
When comparing options across vinyl window styles, the glass package matters as much as the frame material for thermal performance.
Trusted Window Brands Selected for Southeast Michigan Weather
We work with manufacturers built for cold-weather climates. Sunrise Windows, Miter Windows (manufactured in Michigan), and Northstar (manufactured in Canada) all produce vinyl window lines designed to handle the temperature swings, moisture exposure, and UV stress that Southeast Michigan windows face over decades of service.
Selecting manufacturers with a track record in northern climates ensures the products we install meet performance specs that match what homeowners actually need.
Window Styles Available in Energy-Efficient Configurations
Energy-efficient glass and frame technology isn't limited to one window style. All standard window styles are available with insulated glass and Low-E coating options, so you don't trade ventilation preferences or architectural fit for performance:
Casement Windows: Casements crank outward and pull tightly against the frame when closed. That compression seal is one reason we often look at them closely when air leakage is a concern.
Double-Hung Windows: A familiar choice throughout Southeast Michigan, double-hung windows work well in bedrooms, living rooms, and other standard openings. Both sashes operate vertically and tilt inward for cleaning.
Slider Windows: Sliders move horizontally and are well-suited to wider openings where there is more room side-to-side than vertically. We see them regularly in kitchens, family rooms, and other wider wall openings.
Awning Windows: These windows hinge at the top and open outward. They are useful where ventilation is wanted without a large operating sash and can also be combined with fixed windows.

Full-Frame Replacement and In-House Finishing
There are two ways we replace windows: an insert replacement or a full-frame replacement.
With an insert, the existing frame stays in place, and the new window is installed inside it. That can be a perfectly good approach when the original frame is square, solid, properly sealed, and still worth keeping.
A full-frame replacement goes farther. We remove the old window, returning the opening to its original state so we can see what is actually behind it. That gives us access to areas an insert simply covers up, including old insulation, deteriorated framing, gaps around the opening, and other conditions that may be contributing to drafts or water problems.
This is particularly important when energy efficiency is the reason you're replacing the windows. There is little sense in buying better-insulated glass if cold air is still moving around the outside of the frame.
Tailor Made also does something many window companies do not. When the job requires new jamb extensions, casing, stain, paint, or other interior finishing, our own staff completes that work. We do not install the window and leave you looking for another contractor to finish the room.
Our installation and fabrication pages explain more about how that work is done.

Storm Windows as an Additional Layer
Tailor Made offers storm windows for homeowners who want another layer of protection for their existing windows. They create an additional barrier between the original window and Michigan weather, which can help reduce drafts and extend the useful life of an aging window.
They are especially worth considering when you have an original window you want to keep because of its appearance, detailing, or construction.
A storm window will not turn an old single-pane window into a modern insulated replacement window, but as a window company in operation for over 100 years, we understand there are homes and situations where replacement is not the only sensible answer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Energy-Efficient Windows
An insert puts the new window inside the existing frame. Full-frame replacement removes the old window and frame, returning the opening to its original condition. We generally consider full-frame replacement when the existing frame, insulation, trim, or conditions around the opening need attention that an insert would only cover rather than correct.
Energy-efficient windows can reduce heat loss and heat gain compared with old single-pane windows, failed insulated glass units, or windows with significant air leakage, thereby reducing your HVAC’s workload. This can often translate to lower energy bills. We do not promise a specific percentage because homes vary widely. Your insulation, furnace, air conditioning, window area, and existing conditions all affect the result.
It depends on the number of windows and what we find once the project begins. Insert replacements are generally more straightforward. Full-frame work takes longer because we may also need to rebuild and finish the opening. We would rather give you a realistic schedule after seeing the house than quote a timeline that may not fit the job.
Ask what happens beyond the replacement window itself. Will they inspect the opening? Can they do a full-frame replacement when needed? Who finishes the jambs and casing? Who stains or paints the new trim? Tailor Made has been doing this work since 1923, and completing those details is a big part of how we approach a window project.

Tailor Made installed a whole house North Star windows. The installation was excellent, thoroughly professional iworkmanship. The installers were careful, caught problems with damage on several windows. The damaged window frames were promptly replaced. We are pleased with the windows. Much better insulation than old metal windows. Liked additional foam insulation applied around the frames. Would highly recommend Tailor Made.

I called several other companies, but Tailor Made stood out. They are a local company to me and have a solid history. When they came to install the windows, the guys showed up on time and ready to work. They were clean and very fast! I would absolutely use them again!

Had them install my windows this past summer. Every person that came to my house was professional and friendly. The installers were very efficient and did a fantastic job. The windows look great and function perfectly. They slide smooth and are easy to remove from the inside when cleaning. My house had the original aluminum frame windows from 1969, they replaced them with zero issues for a fair price. I'll definitely be using them again for future projects. Highly recommend!
